The Use of Symmetry in Design
Posted by Donna Dorrell on
Although, some people are not secure in their knowledge of symmetry, perspective is instinctual. It is when you simply know that a room seems "off" or unbalanced. Consider, for example, when you come across a space that has a blank wall against a foreground of furniture and decor. You walk in and it just doesn't feel right.
This is because symmetry touches on the subconscious.
By principle, symmetry adds a sense of balance to any design. It also conveys a sense of calmness and stability. When working with symmetry consider the focal point of the room, where the eye naturally goes, and use similar weighted objects and furniture around this spot.
